DARWIN DAY
Today is Charles Darwin’s birthday. Most of us recognize him as the father of evolution. He wrote On the Origin of the Species in 1859 and established that all species of life descended over time from common ancestry. I wasn’t sure how to celebrate today’s holiday without getting all scientific and boring. I did find out a few interesting facts about Mr. Darwin that I thought would be fun to share. My favorite is that he married his first cousin. How’s that for evolutionary, huh? He was 30 years older than her and they had TEN children. He suffered from “episodes of stomach pains, vomiting, severe boils, palpitations, trembling and other symptoms, particularly during times of stress such as attending meetings or making social visits.” Darwin lost one of his daughers at the age of 10 and feared whenever one of his children got sick it was heriditary and due to inbreeding. Hmmm….no comment. An interesting man with a brillant mind, Charles Darwin changed the face of science and is noted as being one of the most influential figures in human history. When we were in D.C. we went to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. They had a huge exhibit on the origins of man and evolution. I took a few pictures that I will share with everyone. In hindsight, I should have taken a lot more if I knew this holiday was on the horizon!
It was a really neat exhibit and I learned a lot. I think I saw a few of my distant (verrrrry distant) ancestors there.
Total Cost to Celebrate: $0

I don’t watch this show, but this clip seemed pretty funny:
P.S. – It’s a fact.
