April 10th Holiday

ONE DAY WITHOUT SHOES

Some of you may have seen some of the promotion going around for today’s holiday. It is organized by the TOMS footwear company. TOMS is a shoe company that donates a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair that is purchased. All the cool kids wear TOMS shoes, I’m sure you’ve seen them around: Or you may have seen the recent commercials from Sketchers for BOBS….a blatant rip-off…..that’s another topic altogether. Anyhow, TOMS has started the One Day Without Shoes movement to get people talking about the health risks children around the world face when they do not have access to shoes. This may seem like a minor inconvenience to us, but in reality there are many serious problems that result from lack of footwear. Here is some info directly from the TOMS website:

  • GROWING UP BAREFOOT In many developing countries, children must walk barefoot for miles to school, clean water and medical help.
  • INJURY AND DISEASE Hundreds of millions of children are at risk of injury, infection and soil-transmitted diseases that most don’t have access to prevent or treat.
  • EDUCATION AND OPPORTUNITY Children who are healthy are more likely to be successful students, and access to education is a critical determinant of long-term success.
  • A BETTER TOMORROW Healthy, educated children have a better chance of improving the future of their entire community.

So, as you can see shoes can make a big difference in the lives of the children that receive these donations. I participated in today’s holiday by going barefoot all day long. Luckily, I was working from home so this did not violate any dress code rules:

These pictures also prove the point that I am in desperate need of a pedicure. Please overlook my unkempt tootsies; I was doing this for a good cause! I have always admired TOMS shoes and have wanted to buy a pair for quite some time now. I have refrained because I already have a zillion pairs of shoes and while TOMS shoes are not super pricey, they are also not all that cheap. BUT, the reason they cost a little bit more is because the money you are paying is always being used to produce a pair for a kiddo that needs them much more than yourself. I think once our crazy house fiasco is over (yes, it is ALMOST over….I will fill you all in at a later date) and we are back on budget, I will be purchasing a pair of super cool TOMS. These are shoes you can feel good about, in more ways than one!

Total Cost to Celebrate: $0

P.S. – Yep, that video just solidified my purchase right there.
