March 3rd Holiday

INTERNATIONAL SISTER CITIES DAY

Sister cities are international cities that partner with each other and work to ‘promote human contact and cultural links.’ Yes, I pulled this off of Wikipedia. I have heard of sister cities before, but I was never really sure what the purpose was exactly. I found that Sister Cities International, a nonprofit organization, heads up this initiative and has the folowing goals:

  • Develop municipal partnerships between U.S. cities, counties, and states and similar jurisdictions in other nations.
  • Provide opportunities for city officials and citizens to experience and explore other cultures through long-term community partnerships.
  • Create an atmosphere in which economic and community development can be implemented and strengthened.
  • Stimulate environments through which communities will creatively learn, work, and solve problems together through reciprocal cultural, educational, municipal, business, professional and technical exchanges and projects.
  • Collaborate with organizations in the United States and other countries which share similar goals.

Okay, some of these make sense but others I am very confused about. How is it that Redford has 3 sister cities? Really, how did that happen? I am sad to discover that the city I grew up in (Livonia), the city I currently live in (Garden City) and the city I am moving to and am employed in (Farmington Hills) do not have sisters. Oh, the lonely life of the only child…

Total Cost to Celebrate: $0

I could not get this theme song out of my head today:

P.S. – “We look alike, but we’re different!” What a concept.
