EMMA M. NUTT DAY

Operator? Give me the number for 911! Today’s holiday celebrates the first woman telephone operator, Emma M. Nutt. She started at the Boston Telephone Dispatch company on this day in 1878 and continued in that position for 33 years. Some interesting facts I found out for today’s holiday:

  • Originally the telephone companies hired boys to be operators. Because they were a little too gruff with their impatience and cursing, it was soon realized that they were not cut out for live phone contact.
  • After the positive feedback about Emma and how great of an operator she was, many companies began replacing all the male operators with females.
  • Requirements for female operators were: they had to be unmarried, between the ages of 17 and 26, look ‘prim and proper’ (yes, it really says that) and have long enough arms to reach the top of the switchboard.
  • Ms. Nutt reportedly had memorized every phone number in the New England Telephone Company directory.
  • Emma worked 54 hours work weeks and was paid a handsome salary of $10 per month….she must have been living like a queen!

Sounds like a great job, huh? Here I am channelling my inner telephone operator:

NATIONAL NO RHYME (NOR REASON) DAY

Orange

Purple

Silver

Chaos

Music

These are some English words that this holiday was built around. I consulted the every knowing Wikipedia and it turns out that these words actually do have perfect rhyming partners, although they are obscure and uncommon words. In honor of today’s celebration, I would like to present a challenge to all you readers out in cyberworld. Whoever writes a poem, prose, song, whatever using the 5 words above and their crazy rhyming partners will get a special surprise on an upcoming September holiday. I look forward to see what you all come up with, it will be interesting for sure! Just for fun, here are some truly non-rhyming English words:

Angel

Monster

Olive

Husband

Secret

Penguin

Can’t wait to see you all bust a rhyme. I feel like we should host a rap/rhyme battle or something now!

Song of the Day:

Telephone by Lady Gaga and Beyonce.

P.S. – I think we can safely say that nothing in the English language rhymes with Beyonce…..
